Jindřich Janíček, illustrator and comic book author, and Carlotta Vacchelli, lecturer at the American University of Rome and former researcher at the Max Planck Institute, map out a journey to explore how illustration captures the essence of places and discoveries on the road. With a focus on the approach, techniques, and experiences of the Czech artist.
For Jindřich Janíček, travel often shapes his visual poetry. With an original eye for subcultural icons he has captured the essence of many corners of the USA, producing graphic memoirs, comics and travelogues. From portraits of 68 American vans to depictions of Oregon bridges, to his recent experiments with depicting bicycles, his work encapsulates the essence of travel.
This meeting is part of Casa Baba, the artistic residency program of Baba Jaga Europe.

Interested in the study and research tools that allow a deep understanding of the socio-cultural role of comics among contemporary expressions, Carlotta Vacchelli (Ph.D. in Italian Studies) teaches the course ‘Rome in Comics & Graphic Novels. An Alternative Gaze on the City’ at the Department of Art History at the American University of Rome.
She has completed several post-doctoral projects in comic studies (Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome – Max-Plank-Institute for Art History, CIMA Center for Italian Modern Art – New York; Ragusa Foundation – New York). Her latest projects include the exhibition AkaB. Qui non esiste morale and the documentary …io porto una piuma. AkaB for Lucca Comics & Games 2023.
She has published several essays and articles for magazines and newspapers and is deputy editor of the online peer-reviewed semi-annual ‘Simultanea. Magazine of media and popular culture in Italy’.
Born in Znojmo, a town in the southern region of the Czech Republic, Jindřich obtained his Bachelor’s degree in animation from Tomas Bata University in Zlín. Then he pursued a Master’s degree in illustration at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague. For the past decade, he dedicated himself to illustration as a full time job.
Jindřich is also a co-founder of the independent publishing house, Take Take Take, a venture he shares with his wife, Nikola, a graphic designer.
